Important Guidelines for Visa Application
(Please read before the application process)
- Applicant has to be physically present at the Embassy during submission of the visa application for biometrics. To avoid delay in the processing of your application, please check and complete the documents before submission.
- Applicants under 12 years and above 70 years are not required to provide biometrics
- Please see below for type of visas, documents required and fees before starting the application process.
- A visa application is required to be filled in the prescribed application form https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/
- Once the application process is complete, please take its print out.
- Application form is to be signed at two places; below the photograph and on the last page by the applicant.
- 1(one) recent (not older than 3 months) colour photograph(2 inches x 2 inches) with white background is to be pasted on the right hand side top corner box of the visa application.
- Passport needs to have a validity of minimum 6 months with at least two blank pages.
- Address reference in Japan and India needs to be furnished in detail.
- All visa applications must be supported with the passport photocopy and residence card copy for non-Japanese nationals.
Validity of visa starts from the date of its issue and not from the date of entry into India.
- Registration is required for certain categories of visa valid beyond 180 days. For detailed information,please check the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India website at https://boi.gov.in/ which also provides other useful information regarding Temporary Landing Permits / Visa-On- Arrival / Visa Extension / Registration / Addresses of FRROs (Foreigners Regional Registration Offices) etc.
- It is advisable that visa be applied well in advance of the intended date of travel to India.
- Applied service is not guaranteed as all applications are subject to checks and procedures.
- Telephonic queries about the status of the applications before the due date is not entertained.
- Applications with false and incorrect information will be rejected.
- No reason would be provided for refusal of visa
- Fees once paid will not be refunded.
- VISA fees are accepted in CASH only. Please go through the fees schedule below for various services carefully and bring the exact required cash.
- Facilities for taking photographs, copying of documents and exchange of currency are not available inside the Embassy premises.
- Diplomatic and Officials Passport holders including UN Official/Staff should also apply online as other passport holders and submit the application forms at the Embassy along with note verbale.
- The visa is granted as per the purpose of the visit declared in the visa application. Involvement in any other activities other than the declared purpose by the applicant during the visit will amount to violation of visa rules.

Original and signed supporting documents like invitation letters, letter of admission, letter of recommendation etc. should be submitted. Only in exceptional cases, scanned copies of such documents may be accepted at the discretion of the Embassy.
E-Mail communications are not acceptable as genuine supporting documents
The onus of establishing the genuineness of a document would lie with the applicant

VISA FEES
For Japanese nationals: Transit Visa: JPY 150 (plus JPY 450/- additional charge) & All other categories of visas irrespective of duration: JPY 1190/- (plus JPY 450/- additional charge)

PROCESSING TIME

2. Other than Japanese nationals: Five (5) to Seven(7) working days.
POSTAL CHARGES
As visa applicant has to be physically present at the Embassy during the submission of application for biometrics, we only allow postal service for receiving the passport after a visa is issued.
For receiving the passport with visa, a postal service of JPY1000 per application needs to be paid.
It may be noted that the applicants seek delivery by post at their own risk. The Embassy uses registered post for dispatch passports but will not be responsible for its loss.

Visa - General
1. As the service requested by me takes too much time, can I have my passport back while the Embassy processes my application?
Ans : Yes, only in exceptional cases. Contact Embassy Visa Desk with an application stating precise reason for seeking the passport back while your application is under process. You will need to furnish a copy of the relevant pages of your passport (including the pages where Japanese visa appears in case of non-Japanese passport holders). You would need to resubmit your passport to the Embassy two days before the pick up time.
2. Who has to register with FRO/FRRO (Foreigners Registration Office / Foreigners Regional Registration Office)?
Ans : Those who are holding Employment visa, Employment dependent visa, student visa valid for one year and Business visa having continuous stay in India more than 180 days.
3. Can Japanese nationals apply for Indian visa only in Japan and not in other Indian Embassies/Consulate in other countries?
Ans :They can apply at any Indian Embassy or Consulate, though time required for processing would be different.
4. Can I take my personal pet such as dog, cat and bird to India?
Ans : As per present policy on import of pets to India, Government of India has allowed import of two pet animals as baggage only to persons transferring their residence to India after two years of continuous stay abroad, subject to production of the required health certificate from the country of origin and examination of said pets by the concerned Quarantine Officer in India. You may also check with the concerned airlines for more details.
5. Do I have to carry health certificate certifying that I am free from AIDS, etc. when I go to India?
Ans : No.
6. What kind of currency should I carry when I go to India?
Ans : All hard currencies like US$, Pound Sterling, Euro, Japanese Yen, etc., are exchangeable in India.
7. Is urgent issue of visa possible?
Ans : Yes but it is decided based on the merit of the case.
Tourist Visa
8. I am an ordinary foreign citizen. Do I need a visa to go to India?
Ans : Yes. All foreign nationals barring those from Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives need visa to visit India.
9. What kind of visa do I need to go to India for sightseeing?
Ans : Tourist visa.
10. What are the requirements for applying for tourist visa?

11. Can I extend tourist visa while staying in India?
Ans : No.
12. What will happen if I have to stay longer due to illness or some other unavoidable reason?
Ans : Please report your problem to the nearest Foreigners Registration Office.
Business Visa
24. What are the requirements for getting Indian business visa?

25. What is the usual validity of Business visa?
Ans : The validity of Business visa is up to 5 years with multiple entries.
26. Can I stay continuously for one year in India with 1 year Business visa?
Ans : Yes, provided you register yourself with FRRO.
27. Can I work in India if I enter India with business visa?
Ans : No.
28. Can I convert my Indian Business visa into Employment visa, Student visa or any other visa after entering India?
Ans : No.
29. Can I extend my Business visa if it expires while I am in India?
Ans : Yes. You need to approach the nearest FRRO/FRO before the visa expires. However, the extension is not guaranteed.
Student / Research Visa
30. What are the requirements for getting Student or Research visa?

31. Is there any difference between Student Visa and Research Visa?
Ans : Yes. For Research Visa, you should first approach the Education & Culture Wing of the Embassy and seek clearance from them (for further details, contact cul.tokyo@mea.gov.in).
32. Can I change my college, institution or university on my own after reaching India with Student visa or Research visa?
Ans : Not in normal circumstances. In exceptional cases, it is done with the approval of Ministry of Home Affairs.
33. Can I extend my visa in India and join another course after completing the course for which I have initially obtained student/research visa?
Ans : Yes, you may, provided the educational institution is recognized. Also please contact the nearest FRRO/FRO in India.
Restricted Area Permit / Protected Area Permit (RAP/PAP)
34. Can I go anywhere in India if I have a valid tourist visa?
Ans : No. Even with a valid Indian visa, you will not be allowed to enter areas such as Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, parts of Himachal Pradesh, parts of Uttarakhand, Laddakh, parts of Jammu & Kashmir, parts of Rajasthan, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
35. What will I do to enter these areas?
Ans : In addition to the Indian visa, you need Restricted/Protected Area Permit (RAP/PAP) to enter these areas.
36. How do I get RAP/PAP?
Ans : All RAP/PAP will only be granted on e-FRRO portal. Please visit https://indianfrro.gov.in/
37. Can I take my professional model video camera/camera to India for my personal use?
Ans : Yes. All professional equipment carried by passengers need to be declared at the Customs at port of entry.
38. Can I change my Tourist visa to Student visa, Business visa or any other visa after I reach India?
Ans : No.
39. What will be the validity of my tourist visa and how many entries can I make with my Indian tourist visa?
Ans : Generally, a Tourist Visa is valid for six months with multiple entries. However, the period and number of entries may differ on case to case basis.
40. Is the validity of the Indian visa starts from the date of issue or from the date of entry into India?
Ans :Validity of the Indian visa starts from the date of issue.
41. Can I do some other thing such as joining Yoga classes, do petty business, attending short courses, etc. after entering India with Tourist visa?
Ans : No. For such cases, apply for appropriate visa.
42. Can I carry satellite phone to India?
Ans. Bringing in or using satellite phones (e.g. Thuraya, Iridium, etc.) in India without prior permission/license from Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, is prohibited under Indian law.
E-VISA
If you do not wish to apply Indian visa at the Embassy, you may avail facility of e-visa for tourist, business, Ayush, student, conference and medical etc. However, the Embassy will not be able to help you to either process or redress your grievances regarding e-visa application. Therefore, please do not inquire at the Embassy about your e-visa status after application help.
