Unveiling of bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture

Bapu in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture

A bust of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled by Ambassador Nagma Mohamed Mallick and Mr. Akihito Uesada, Mayor of Matsue, at Suetsugu Park adjacent to Matsue City Hall, Matsue, Shimane Prefecture on 2nd June.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Mr. Toshiyuki Iitsuka, Mayor of Izumo, Mr. Takashi Igi, Mayor of Yonago, Mr. Choemon Tanabe, Chairman of Lake Nakaumi, Lake Shinji & Mt. Daisen Area Block Economic Council, Mr. Norio Matsuo, Chairman of San-in India Association, Mr. Hiroki Otani, President of Shimane University, and members of the Indian community. Consul General Chandru Appar joined the ceremony.

In her remarks, Ambassador recalled to the audience that Mahatma Gandhi was called the Father of the Indian nation or Bapu and highlighted the continuing relevance of his message to meet the challenges of today’s world; she added that the park, thanks to the bust, would now be a symbol of friendship between India and Japan. Mayor Uesada thanked the Government of India for the gifting of the bust and hoped that the relationship between India and the San-in region would be further strengthened in the days to come.

The bust of Mahatma Gandhi was presented by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations to the people of Lake Nakaumi, Lake Shinji & Mt. Daisen Area at the request of Mayor Akihito Uesada, who is also the Chairman of the regional Mayors’ Association. It is noteworthy that Shimane University in Matsue City hosts the bust of Bharat Ratna Sir C V Raman, which was unveiled in May 2025 to celebrate India-Japan Year of Science, Technology and Innovation.
